The third of our quarterly print competitions proved to be a little more than usually challenging, with visiting judge Brian Burden LRPS making full use of the scores available to him, ranging from 14 to 20 ( top marks. The highest scoring members were Dave Patterson with “ Catalonia “,

Alan Greeley with “ On Westminster Bridge “, and Adrian Simmongs with “ Young Eathon”. Dave and Alan both achieved the highest marks of the evening (56) so as we head towards the final print competition

The “ leaderboard” is getting rather interesting!

In the second presentation from the Povey brothers, this time from Ron, we were treated to, to put it mildly, a great many themes in his audiovisual show. Starting with a review of his visits to the Isles of Scilly, and in particular his tour of the local craft workshops, we moved on to a short show featuring the local morris sides performing at local venues. Most of his sequences, however, demonstrated his skill in what is generally known as tabletop photography, combined with the use of puppets, to produce short stories set to music. Most featured his no. 1 model Bonzo – a small, hairy toy dog ( which also happens to be the clubs’ mascot ! ). Ranging from a visit to Wimbledon, a world tour by air

in slightly suspicious aircraft, to a collection of familiar faces at Ascot, Ron’s sense of humour provided what could genuinely be described as a unique evenings’ entertainment.

It was a dark and stormy night, resulting in a lower attendance than usual for an evening presented by our member Rowland Povey. Those who were unable to attend, however, missed a truly enjoyable evening. Using images taken during an extended visit to America, a trip along the Severn, and a compilation of images obtained from various visits to the Royal Berkshire ( aka Newbury ) Show, we were treated with six separate projected sequences, skilfully edited and accompanied by suitable music. Rowland also showed us paintings that he had done, copied from pictures take during his visit to America to visit relatives, painting being another of his many skills. The American trip involved travelling down part of the eastern seaboard, which enabled Rowland to take a sequence of images capturing a most amazing sight – the revolving restaurant at the top of the Space Needle tower turning into an Identified Flying Object!

Competition time again, this time the third of our quarterly pdi ( projected digital image) contests. Using club equipment, this enables members to project images produce with their digital cameras. As ever it was an interesting and tightly-fought event, with visiting judge Gordon Joslin awarding just one image the maximum mark of 20 – to “ Still looking for a pot of gold “ from our international division, Gerda Bolton, who is now based in France! Points are awarded to each image with a maximum of 20, members submitting a total of 3 images. The evening produced three 19-scoring images, not least from new member Omar Ehsan, with his image simply titled

“ Web “ – a brilliant result for his first competition entry. An enjoyable evening with an expert judge.
