This was not a competition so much as an entertainment and will hopefully inspire those present to have a go next season. The evening was rounded off by a short stop – motion programme presented by member Pasquale Vaira, demonstrating that it is possible to produce this type of movie using a digital camera. An instructive and entertaining evening.
The production of audio visual sequences – combining projected images with a suitable soundtrack – has long been one of the mainstays of camera club programmes. Traditionally involving the production of ( sometimes hundreds ) of slides, and the use of tape recorders and other heavy items, digital photography and computers have made this aspect of photography easier – and lighter now that you can carry many complete shows on a memory stick! To encourage members to produce their own shows, our club recently held a “ Members’ A/V evening “. Seven shows were presented, the rules stating that no presentation should last more than seven minutes. Subjects were certainly varied – from

The final round of our quarterly print competitions was as tightly fought as ever, but following yet another high-scoring evening, member Dave Patterson, with a score on the evening of 58 ( from a possible 60 ) ,giving him an aggregate score of 222, beating Keith Bowsher who achieved 215. Top marks for the evening went to David Sherwell ARPS,, shown pictured with our judge Roger McCullum, whose encouragement and remarks will hopefully spur other members to produce winning shots during the summer. Our area has a very active photographic community – not surprising given that we all live in one of the most popular tourist areas in the UK. The area supports many photographic societies within a 25 mile radius of Reading, who enjoy friendly rivalry and social contact. Once a year the six local clubs meet in battle for the JPCR shield, and this time it was South Reading CC’s turn to host the event. This competition originated around 20 years ago when the clubs first convened to mount a joint exhibition ( “ Joint Photo Clubs of Reading “). Due to the large attendance we moved to a larger hall for the evening ( Tilehurst Methodist Church Halls ) for an evening of both prints and projected images. Our judge for the evening, Tony Oliver LRPS CPAGB, from Salisbury Camera Club, did a superb job of commenting on and marking the images, resulting in a close finish for the leading clubs. Unfortunately South Reading was not among the leaders ( this time! ) but no club disgraced itself, there being only 16 points between the highest and lowest score. The overall winners were Wokingham & East Berkshire PS, with a combined score of 175 (from a possible 200)
